Fiji Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry has raised the question on the delay on the Code of Conduct and Freedom of Information legislations and the appointment for the Accountability and Transparency Commission over the last seven years. Chaudhry says Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum should look at the failure in curbing corruption before lecturing the judiciary on the matter.
Sayed-Khaiyum had said they have had discussions with the judiciary about establishing a separate branch that looks exclusively at corruption-related cases.
While speaking on Anti-Corruption Day, Sayed-Khaiyum said if we are to build a culture of fairness and deterrence, we need the judiciary squarely on the side of a corruption-free Fiji.
He added that we need the courts to be fully enlisted in Fiji’s quest to root out corruption, inequality and punish all those who break the law.
When asked about Chaudhry raising the question, Sayed-Khaiyum did not want to respond.
