Cathedral Secondary School in Suva is now named Sacred Heart College.
This was announced at the school’s 55th anniversary celebration today.
The School Principal Petero Sioweli says that Sacred Heart is the patron of the college ever since it started in 1961 and the patron becomes the name of the college.
He says that the biggest achievements of the college since its establishment is that many ex-scholars have secured jobs in the civil service, in the private sector, and one of the first students of the college, Fred Caine even joined parliament.
Sioweli adds that he sees this as an achievement because when the college started, it was mainly for disadvantaged boys who could not find education in the Suva area.
He says that there are Sacred Heart Colleges in Australia and New Zealand and this name change would mean that there could be collaboration between these colleges in future in initiatives such as student exchange programs.
The Archbishop of Fiji Peter Loy Chong was the Chief Guest at the anniversary celebration.
