Some cane farmers of Volivoli and Rarapatu in Rakiraki who have lost nearly everything in Tropical Cyclone Winston are ready to harvest sugarcane which is still standing in their farms.
The Advisory Councillor for Volivoli East/West and Rarapatu, Divendra Prasad says although Cyclone Winston made landfall in Rakiraki, most of the sugarcane farms are still looking green.
He says the sugarcane in the farms may not have reached it’s peak time for harvest, but it is still useful and it will be a big relief to the cane farmers who need funds to build their homes.
Prasad says there are 100 houses in Volivoli and Rarapatu with a population of 394.
He says 11 houses have been severely damaged while the remaining houses were partially damaged.
Prasad says people have not left their houses and have done small repair works with the assistance that has been arriving in Rakiraki.
He says more than 90% of people in his area are dependent on sugarcane and they are grateful for the early cane payment.
