A man is in police custody after being recorded in a viral video resisting arrest and throwing several punches at a police officer in the middle of the road in Lautoka.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP) Livai Driu says the officer was responding to a report of trouble along Vitogo Parade, where the suspect was allegedly harassing members of the public.
In the video circulating on social media, the officer can be seen attempting to arrest the suspect, who resisted and was assisted by a group of bystanders.
While responding to the comments on the video suggesting that police need more close-contact combat training, ACP Driu says all officers receive defence and combat training during their Basic Recruit Course, including techniques for apprehending suspects.
ACP Driu says officers face diverse situations daily and evaluate each one before responding.
He adds that their officers also participate in human rights training provided by law enforcement partners and stakeholders.
The Fiji Police Force expressed their appreciation for the individuals who assisted the officer, helping to subdue the suspect.
ACP Driu reminded all officers to be cautious about the level of force used, as excessive force could lead to complaints being filed against them.
