Bollywood actor Sunny Deol has become the latest member of his family to be elected to the parliament on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket.
His father veteran actor Dharmendra and step‑mother Bollywood’s ‘Dream Girl’ Hema Malini have been BJP members elected to the Lok Sabha or House of the People which is the lower house of India's bicameral Parliament with the upper house being the Rajya Sabha.
After his win, the actor‑turned‑politician thanked the people and assured them that he would work for their welfare.

The Gurdaspur seat which the actor has won, a BJP stronghold, was formerly represented by actor‑turned‑politician Vinod Khanna in 1998, 1999, 2004 and 2014.
The 62 year old debuted in films with the movie "Betaab" in 1983. Over the years, he excelled in action hero roles in films like Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Damini, and Border. He has at least 94 movies to his credit.
Meanwhile, other Bollywood celebrities who also contested the 2019 elections but were unsuccessful include Urmila Matondkar and Prakash Raj, and Shatrughan Sinha’s wife and actress, Poonam Sinha.
