In a field traditionally dominated by men, former Natabua High School student Siobahn Bogidrau aims to thrive in the engineering industry and hopes that her journey will be an inspiration for females in Fiji nowadays.
Bogidrau is completing her Electrical Fitter apprentice program at the Fiji Sugar Corporation at Lautoka Mill and says it is important to set goals, work hard and stay focused.
She says despite growing up without female mentors in engineering, her interest in engineering was sparked during her classes.
The 20-year-old says the engineering field is not just for men and she has never felt limited as a woman.
Bogidrau says the FSC apprentice program is designed to equip young individuals with the skills necessary for successful careers in engineering and technical fields.
She says students engage in comprehensive training that includes theoretical knowledge and practical application, covering vital areas such as electrical maintenance, mechanical repairs, and process optimisation within the sugar industry.
She says FSC has provided her with on-the-job training and technical skills that make her feel confident.
Bogidrau says women can achieve just as much as men in any field, including engineering.
FSC CEO, Bhan Pratap Singh says they recognise the critical importance of fostering diversity and inclusion within the workforce.
Singh says the apprentice program is a key initiative in creating a supportive environment for women like Siobahn, as the number of women in engineering roles continues to rise.
Applications for the 2025 FSC Apprentice Program will open in November.
