Vessel operators and owners are reminded to take caution when loading passengers and cargos during this busy festive season.
Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji spokesperson Solomoni Mathewsella said it is an offence under Section 81 of the Marine Act of 1986 to overload passenger vessels.
Mathewsella said a fine of $5000 and imprisonment of 2 years is the penalty for those who do not adhere to the regulations.
He added that an additional fine of $500 will be charged for each person carried on board the overloaded vessel.
He said operators and vessel owners should comply with the number of persons permitted on vessels to ensure the safety and security of the traveling public.
