Having cancer does not mean that you will die as thirty percent of the cancer cases reported in Fiji can be prevented while seventy percent can be cured if detected early.
That is the sentiment of the President of the Fiji Cancer Society, Nirmala Nambiar while officially launching the Fiji's Biggest Morning Tea.
Nambiar reveals that an average of 450 new cases are reported a year while 460 people die each year. She said the challenge is to provide support.
The same sentiment was shared by the Dean for the Fiji National University's School of Medicine, Doctor Ian Rouse.
Rouse while addressing those in attendance this morning spoke of his personal experience where his mother suffered breast cancer and his father who went through colon cancer.
He said following 10 simple steps which includes a balanced diet, eating more vegetables and cutting down on red meat as well as following doctors advice and going for regular check-ups would reduce the risk of cancer and also for those with cancer would mean they will be able to have a stronger body and be able to fight cancer.
In the statistics released by the Fiji Cancer Society, for 2008 there were a total of 455 new cases while there were 459 deaths recorded due to cancer.
Patients at the CWM Hospital who need surgery are not getting operated on time due to faulty elevators.
