Following the attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, President Joe Biden has condemned the attack and says there’s no place for this kind of violence in America.
Secret Service confirms the gunman has been shot dead and two injured people are in critical condition.
In a statement from his Delaware home, Biden says he has been briefed on the shooting and is grateful to hear that Trump is safe and doing well.
Biden says he is praying for him and his family and all those who were at the rally, as they await further information.
He says his Jill and he are grateful to the Secret Service for getting Trump to safety.
A White House official says Biden spoke to Trump but did not say what the two spoke about.
Following the shooting, Trump dropped to the ground and was swarmed by Secret Service agents.
He had blood on his face and appeared to raise a fist into the air as he was escorted off stage and taken to the hospital.
He has since been discharged.
Trump, on his Truth Social account, says he was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of his right ear.
He says he knew immediately that something was wrong in that he heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.
Trump will attend the Republican National Convention from Tuesday as planned.
