It will be a battle of the brothers this afternoon in Lautoka when the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua takes on the Chiefs, this time not on the field as Fijian Drua forwards coach Chris Gibbes faces off with his brother and Chiefs’ Assistant Coach Jono Gibbes.
During an interview with fijivillage News Director Vijay Narayan in Lautoka, Chris says it is going to be an exciting game, and it is going to be something special for him and Jono.
Chris says he and Jono had a great family chat and there is still a lot of chat going through the family at the moment and in their different camps.
He says there are a lot of Chiefs supporters at home and then in the family as well, so this is a special moment.
Chris also confirmed their links to Fiji saying that his grandmother is from Rotuma and his father and his brothers were born and raised in Suva before moving to New Zealand at a very young age.
He says they have got family in Auckland that have talked about the history with him and his brothers.
He adds although they have not lived that side of it, it is a special and important part of their lives, so it is great to be coaching the Fijian Drua, the team with the Fiji connection.
When asked about the work he has put in to improve the Drua forwards, Chris says the foundation was set by former forwards coach Greg Flemming, and for him, he has got experience and he knows what needs to happen with this pack.
