The teaser trailer for the locally produced film “Bati” offered audiences a glimpse of Fiji's latest full-length independent feature film, which was the first since 2004’s The Land Has Eyes.
It is a significant moment for Fijian cinema and a new addition to the growing list of films from the Pacific Islands.
Filmed in Suva and Namosi, the film “Bati” is a boxing drama that follows Fijian characters and explores themes of survival and resilience.
The cast comprises Fijian actors, including James Rabuatoka, Jedidiah Tuinasavusavu, Asesela Ravuvu, Romeo Naura, Nadeem Shekh, Naibuka Qarau, and Sadrishan Velaidan.
Writer-director Andrew John Fakaua Ponton offers a grounded perspective rooted in local experiences and says it has been a privilege to work on this film alongside so many talented and dedicated people.
Ponton says they hope the film will resonate with people in Fiji and beyond.
The film was produced with a local crew, further reinforcing its connection to Fiji’s filmmaking community.
Damien Light served as Director of Photography, with Naomi Beyer as Production Manager.
“Bati” is set to premiere in cinemas across Fiji and Samoa on the 21st of August, 2025, with a 4th September release to follow in Papua New Guinea.
