Rusiate Matai of Balata High School in Tavua has won the first gold for his school in the senior boys high jump with a jump of 2.03 metres in the 2024 Coca-Cola Games at the HFC Bank Stadium. Matai says he was aiming to break the record of 2.09 metres that was set by Antonio Rahiman 21 years ago, but unfortunately, he missed out on that.
Matai says his target now is to prepare well and to aim to level with the current record at the Oceania Competition in June.
Ratu Simione Kaiwalu of Marist Brothers High School settled for silver with a jump of 1.99 metres while Gabiriele Kavekai of Holy Cross College took the bronze with a jump of 1.91 metres.
