Deputy Leader of the Opposition Parveen Bala has called out the government for notable exclusions of other divisional celebrations and the non-inclusion of students from special schools and senior citizens in the recent Coalition government’s Fiji Day celebration that was held in Labasa.

Bala says while the celebration in Labasa was duly acknowledged, it felt like a missed opportunity to build national confidence and reaffirm Fiji’s unity.

He says in previous years, special measures were taken to include these groups, showcasing inclusion, harmony, and progress for all Fijians.

He adds special schools were recognized and celebrated with gift packs.

Bala says we must do better to ensure that Fiji Day is more than just a symbolic gesture as it should be a platform to strengthen the nation’s unity and highlight our progress as a nation.

He says this was something the previous governments consistently achieved through their emphasis on engagement with all sectors of society.

While replying to Bala's comments, Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration Pio Tikoduadua says while constructive feedback is always welcome, it is disheartening to see this being used for cheap political point-scoring.

Tikoduadua says the decision to hold the main celebrations in Labasa was a deliberate effort to promote inclusivity and regional representation.

He says the Northern Division is a vital part of Fiji and was given the recognition it deserves through the national celebrations.

He adds contrary to the opposition’s claims, various local events were held across other divisions, including special arrangements for schools and communities to ensure participation.

Tikoduadua says it is also worth noting that certain members of the opposition were part of the celebrations in the North, actively engaging in the event, which undermines these claims of exclusion.

He says the government remains committed to ensuring that Fiji Day serves as a platform to celebrate the unity and diversity of all Fijians.

The Minister says attempts to politicise this event only distract from the shared spirit of pride and progress that this day represents.

He says the coalition government will continue to work towards fostering national unity and ensuring that every corner of Fiji feels included in our national celebrations.
