Former Chief Executive Officer for the Prime Minister's office and former Ambassador to Japan, Joji Kotobalavu said the Bainimarama government should be acknowledged for the constructive steps it has taken to return the country to constitutional democracy.

Kotobalavu who was one of the panelists at the University of the South Pacific's discussion on democracy in the context of Fiji's new constitution' said no country in the world has a constitution which has the unanimous approval or endorsement of its people.

However he said as citizens of Fiji we owe it to the government to commend it for trying to return us to the rule of law.

Kotobalavu said by the governments free and deliberative participation in the elections, it is the people who will grant legitimacy on the constitution and through that the legality of the government to be appointed under the constitution.

He said the question that challenges us today is what citizens can do to ensure the integrity of the whole elections process.
