Taxi drivers and residents have raised concerns regarding the bad road conditions along most of the roads in the old capital, Levuka however the Fiji Roads Authority says they have begun applying compacted crushed gravel to the road surface on Ovalau Circular Road.
Levuka taxi driver, Binit Rahul says unfortunately, the only time there are road repairs is when a government official is making a visit.
Rahul says the bad road conditions over the years has resulted in high cost of maintenance for taxi operations.
He says its costly ordering new tyres and suspension boosting along with shock absorbers which are continuously damaged due to the increased potholes along most roads in Levuka.
The Levuka resident says it seems like their concerns have fallen on deaf ears.
Rahul also highlighted that with the increased number of potholes, drivers can have a head-on-collision at sharp bends.
Returning from the US after a year, another Levuka resident Anton Narayan of Draiba Village says coming back to the island and seeing the state of the roads makes him feel like Levuka is left unnoticed by authorities.
Narayan says someone has to fix the huge potholes on the road and due to no seawall, sea water is washing away and leaving gaps on roads especially along Draiba Village to PAFCO and Waitovu Village to Cawaci.
When questioned by fijivillage News, FRA confirmed that their contractors are on the ground, actively engaged in applying compacted crushed gravel in all the critical sections along the Ovalau Circular Road.
They say once these works are completed, the grading works program will commence covering the whole of Ovalau Circular Road.
