The Australian High Commission in Suva is aware of a scam circulating on social media and the internet announcing visa free entry to Australia for Fiji nationals.

A spokesperson says the Australian Government has not made any changes to the entry requirements for Fiji citizens as it maintains a non‑discriminatory visa regime and recent reporting which indicates that Australia may have changed this approach is incorrect.

The Australian High Commission has also highlighted this as a great concern as there have been previous incidents when scammers have targeted websites with false promises of jobs or travel to Australia.

It says any suspected fraud should be reported to the Fiji Police Force, the Fiji Commerce Commission or the Australian High Commission in Suva.

The Fiji Commerce Commission has also raised concerns about false claims being circulated on Facebook on “Fiji to enjoy free visa to Australia”.

Commerce Commission CEO Joel Abraham had said this is a major concern as more than 50 cases of misleading and deceptive trade practices by various travel agents have been recorded in which Fijians have lost over $190,000 in the past year or so.
