The Australian government has denied that the government's tough approach to Fiji is out of step with the United States.
The Opposition in Australia has told a Senate hearing that Australia has no clear vision for returning Fiji to democracy and risks of being outmaneuvered by the Fiji government.
It said five years of trying to isolate Fiji has not worked, and the US is now calling for closer engagement with Fiji.
The Australian Government also said it has always been prepared to have constructive dialogue with Fiji and has also reiterated Australia's commitment to a regional trade agreement, the PACER Plus.
