95% of cases seen in all health facilities around the country are asthmatic patients.
This is according to a 2014 Asthma proposal compiled by a group of emergency doctors of the CWM Hospital.
The proposal highlights that in Fiji, asthma cases are also rising especially in those between the ages of 14 and 20 years old.
With the limited statistics available, baseline data on the number of patients admitted in the 3 major hospitals are 2,285 cases in the past four years.
These include pediatric cases and a mortality rate of 6.6% of admitted patients.
The proposal states that the hospital care of an asthmatic patient is a health burden therefore informing the public on prevention and close monitoring is important.
World Asthma Day will be observed today and the Global theme is “You Can Control Your Asthma”.
