Around 50 villages in Fiji are experiencing the impact of flooding during high tide as one of the effects of climate change.
The Director of Itaukei Affairs Board Provincial Manager Timoci Namotu has said that they partner with Non Governmental Organisations to build more resilient communities.
Namotu said an exact figure of villages affected is hard to determine as the numbers continue to rise.
Namotu added that the approach now used is to build the capacity of people to assess the impact of climate change themselves and take the lead role in improving their resilience.
Most coastal villages he said are starting to apply what they’ve learnt by building seawalls, replanting mangroves and trees and continuing to monitor the threats.
Meanwhile, today United States Ambassador Frankie Reed and US Agency for International Development (USAID) launched new projects by pledging US$23.6m for Coastal Community Adaption, US$7.5m for Mangrove Rehabilitation and US$1.5m for Vocational Training and Education for Clean Energy.
Pledged over $32.6m to help launch new Climate Change projects for Fiji.
