The official July 4th Independence Day celebrations at the US Embassy in Fiji has been postponed until September due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
US Ambassador to Fiji Joseph Cella says there will only be a small gathering of friends and colleagues at his residence today.
Cella was a guest on Legend FM Kickstart with John this morning.
He talked about the iconic song “God Bless the U.S.A” and the latest version by American country music artist Lee Greenwood, the United States Air Force Band and country vocal band – Home Free.
The song “God Bless the U.S.A” was played for the first time on Legend FM this morning.
Cella also says today was a time to reflect on the preciousness of life and liberty.
July 4th is Independence Day in the United States of America.
It is a federal holiday which marks the day in 1776 when the Second Continental Congress unanimously adopted the Declaration of Independence, signaling the official separation of the colonies from Great Britain amid the Revolutionary War.
Since that day, July 4, 1776, has been considered America’s “birthday,” making her 244 years old today.
According to the US Library of Congress, Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a celebration, but it wasn’t until after the War of 1812 that July 4th celebrations spread across the new nation.
The day is often celebrated with parades, fireworks shows, and parties, though much of the celebrations this year have been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
