The trial of a man who allegedly abducted and raped a 12-year-old girl in 2018 has been deferred as the man fired his lawyer.
The trial was scheduled to start in the Suva High Court this morning.
Ateshwar Prasad who was 40-years-old at the time of the incident is charged with a count each of rape, sexual assault, wrongful confinement and abduction.
The alleged incident happened on 21st July, 2018 in Navua.
Lawyer, John Rabuku who represented the man up until today told the court that he received a change of solicitors notice last Friday and was unable to see his client who is in remand.

Rabuku says Prasad’s complaint is based on assertions that he has not been seen by him while preparing for the case.
Rabuku told the court that he is seeking leave to withdraw from the case because the accused has withdrawn his instructions.
He says he was ready for the trial to begin today.
Prasad then told the court that he has now engaged lawyer, Iqbal Khan.
High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Goundar says he cannot force the accused to continue engaging Rabuku and has granted the lawyer leave to withdraw from the case.
The case has been adjourned to the 27th of August.
