Vilikesa Bari, who was allegedly assaulted by a police officer in Nausori over the weekend is currently awaiting surgery at the CWM Hospital, for a serious jaw injury.
Bari was transferred from Wainibokasi Hospital to Suva yesterday afternoon.
Bari’s mother, Unaisi Qionimacawa confirmed to fijivillage News that her son will be going in for surgery tomorrow.
Qionimacawa says her son has not been able to eat due to the injuries he sustained and is only taking fluids.
Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has directed the Director Internal Affairs to look into the assault claims made against the officer, assuring the family and members of the public of a thorough investigation.
A post on social media claims the man, who was allegedly assaulted had reported to the police officer that his brother had been punched.
It is alleged that instead of helping the man out, the officer put him in the vehicle and hit him on the head then continued to beat him at the station.
Chew says officers are constantly reminded to uphold the rule of law in the execution of their duties as they are all equally answerable to the law.
