An agreement has been signed between the Frankston City Council of Melbourne and Suva City Council that will be used as a means to promote the development of urban city life and translate into better living standards.
Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says they see this as an opportunity to share experiences, resources and expertise that advance their common aspirations.
Kumar says they have identified some critical areas of cooperation from culture, education and sport.
She says they will achieve more specific goals over the next couple of months and are optimistic the working relationship between the two municipalities will lead to beneficial results.
Kumar says this relationship has been formed to re-engineer business activities and continue strengthening asset management.
The Councillor of Frankston City Council, Kris Bolam says today's announcement is a bright spot for the two sister cities.
Bolam says in recognition of this announcement and the budding relationship between the two cities, they decided last year to make two contributions to Suva City and the government of Fiji.
He says the first contribution was AUS$6,000 to assist in the transportation of hospital beds to assist Fiji, and the second contribution of AUS$5,500 was for emergency medical and sanitary supplies.
