The President of the Soqosoqo Vakamarama iTaukei, Adi Finau Tabakaucoro is urging the young iTaukei not to look down on themselves for being the indigenous people of Fiji because their ancestors had the knowledge beyond their time.
Speaking at the International Day of the Indigenous People celebration hosted by the Ministry for iTaukei Affairs, Adi Finau says iTaukei knowledge is not found in books, but it is passed down from generation to generation through activities and knowledge.
She says words and actions are an important aspect of the iTaukei culture as it shows a person's identity and it can also differentiate people.
Adi Finau says a clear depiction of the knowledge their ancestors had is how an iTaukei home is constructed without the use of modern tools and materials which have lasted for decades.
She adds that another clear indication of indigenous knowledge is how they built huge boats and navigate through the ocean using their surroundings.
