Attorney General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum confirms they are working with the Asian Development Bank to develop a major master plan to possibly relocate the Suva Port.
While speaking in parliament this morning, Sayed-Khaiyum says the Suva Port is becoming too small and they are working to relocate it where the Port will be a one stop shop which will accommodate all container ships, fishing vessels and ship building.
Sayed-Khaiyum says the Suva Port then can be essentially used for cruise liners.
He also revealed that before the end of this year, the Suva Port will be equipped with two mobile harbour cranes which will enable Suva Port to accommodate vessels without ship cranes.
He says this will allow Fiji Ports Limited to receive larger vessels with higher volumes.
Meanwhile, Sayed-Khaiyum today told SODELPA Parliamentarians, Niko Nawaikula and Salote Radrodro to provide statistics to back their claim.
While asking a supplementary question, Nawaikula had claimed that the volume of Fiji’s trans-shipment continues to decline.
Salote Radrodro then claimed that during this government’s time, there has been a huge reduction in the number of cruise liners coming into Fiji’s ports.
She asked Sayed-Khaiyum to explain why there is a reduction of cruise liners as they contribute a lot to Fiji’s economic growth.
