The Accident Compensation Commission of Fiji has paid out more than $10 million in compensation to victims and families of motor vehicle, employment and school accidents since the introduction of the no-fault compensation in January 2018.

The Commision CEO, Parvez Akbar says the amount of compensation being paid under the Accident Compensation scheme is significantly more than what was being paid prior to the introduction of the scheme due to its no-fault nature and the reasonableness of the exclusions.

Akbar says in spite of the challenges of the current environment, their team have continued to work hard to ensure that victims of accidents and their families receive compensation in a timely manner.

He says the recent payout includes a Motor Vehicle Accident Compensation of $225,000 which was paid to the personal representative of the victims of a motor vehicle accident that resulted in the death of two passengers and a driver in Ba.

Akbar says the cause of the accident was the driver failing to stop at a junction and making a right turn in front of a bus.

The CEO says a School Accident Compensation of $15,000 was paid to a student whose right eye got caught in a barbed wire fence whilst playing in school.

Akbar says $9,000 was also paid as School Accident Compensation to a student who suffered a hand fracture after tripping during physical education.

He says a Employment Accident Compensation of $75,000 was paid to the personal representative of a victim of an employment accident where the worker was stabbed to death while on duty.

Akbar says another Employment Accident Compensation of $3,000 was paid to a worker who was using a bench sander machine when his left hand slipped and struck the machine resulting in laceration.

He says a Employment Accident Compensation of $33,000 was paid to a worker who was dressing timber when his fingers got caught in the machine resulting in the amputation of his right finger.

Akbar says a Employment Accident Compensation of $1,500 was paid to a worker who was assaulted with a rod by a drunk passenger as he was denied entry into a bus, resulting in laceration to his chest and forearm.

He says a Employment Accident Compensation of $4,500 was paid to a worker who fell down the stairs at work, resulting in a fracture to her right ankle.

Akbar says a $3,000 was paid as Employment Accident Compensation to a worker whose fingers got trapped under heavy timber slabs causing fractures to his fingers.

He says another Employment Accident Compensation of $25,500 was paid to a worker who fell while descending a slippery walkway, resulting in severe injuries to her ankle and knee.
