A new virus Chikungunya known as CHIK Virus which is similar to Dengue Fever has been reported in Fiji.
Ministry of Health spokesperson Sunil Chandra said following lab tests, it is confirmed that an imported case of Chik Virus has been reported in the country.
He said the CHIK Virus and Dengue are spread by the same mosquito vector and the symptoms which are similar to Dengue will begin in 3 to 7 days after being bitten by the infected mosquitoes.
However, the pain from the CHIK Virus may persist for months or years in some cases.
To reduce the mosquito density levels in the community, the Health Ministry is encouraging everyone to clean up their surroundings.
Meanwhile, 502 cases of Dengue Fever have been recorded so far.
