Fiji Roads Authority’s Acting CEO, Kamal Prasad says a contractor doing road works in one area could leave a nearby road with potholes as they have a plan for road works and contractors are paid for each square metre of the road they fix.
Concerns have been raised that road contractors working on some roads are leaving roads nearby or part of the same road which also have numerous pot holes.
Prasad says they first focus on roads which have high volume traffic and this is where roads like Milverton Road, Grantham Road, Lovoni Road, Brown Street and Nokonoko Road were prioritised.
According to Prasad, almost 90% of high volume roads have been fixed.
He says some of the high volume roads like Kings Road from Kinoya traffic lights to Valelevu roundabout, Yasiyasi Road in Nadera, Kanace Road and Daniva Road in Valelevu are left to be fixed.
He says following these roads, connecting roads and other roads with less volume of traffic will be fixed in various areas.
Prasad says since they are finishing works on Lovoni Road, and their teams will now slowly move to other roads in Samabula like Kaba Road, lower Bureta Street and a few more roads in Samabula that were left to be completed.
Prasad says all road works are planned and they are not overpaying the contractors for going back into the areas that they had visited earlier.
FRA’s CEO says road works have been delayed by six weeks because of rain and low supply of biutemen. He says 9,800 tonnes of bitumen is arriving in Fiji on 21st March.
