Deputy Police Commissioner, Rusiate Tudravu says 995 special constables are expected to be regularized by the 1st of next month.
Tudravu says this was their commitment to government.
He says the regularization of 995 Special Constables into the regular force is being done to adapt to new policing challenges.
Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum had earlier stated that the nature and tactics of criminals are evolving particularly in hard synthetic drugs, which is why the Fiji Police Force needs to evolve.
While delivering the 2019/2020 National Budget earlier this year, Sayed-Khaiyum had mentioned that the 995 constables that will be regularized will send a clear message to drug traffickers that doing business in Fiji waters will only get you a bunk space in a prison cells.
The Fiji Police Force was allocated $177.8 million in the National Budget of which $800,000 is provided to undertake special drugs operations.
