One of the offspring’s of the indentured laborers who arrived in the country 135 years ago is thankful to the iTaukei community to allow the Indians to live in Fiji after independence.
A former school teacher, 93 year old Mohammed Shafiq Koya who is the elder brother of former Opposition Leader, the late S.M Koya said Fiji is much better than other countries who gained independence.
He said he has lived a healthy life, is still fit and can walk without a stick.
Koya has six children who all live abroad.
The Leonidas, a labour transport vessel, disembarked in Levuka from Calcutta on the 14th of May 1879.
The 463 indentured workers were the first of over 61,000 to arrive from South and East Asia in the following 37 years.
