900 Fijians were left affected by the collapse of the Ebay Online Shop recruitment scam last year with the Consumer Council recording complaints worth $1.7 million.
Council Chief Executive Seema Shandil says the impact of the scam is just the tip of the iceberg.
In a bid to counter the growing issue of scams in Fiji, the Government and various stakeholders discussed how to reduce scams during the National Scams Awareness Week which started yesterday.
Permanent Secretary for Trade, Cooperatives, SMEs, and Communications Shaheen Ali says through collaborative efforts from various stakeholders, the Government will have more targeted measures to address this issue.
He says they will be reviewing the legislation and work with the Anti Scam Task Force which has been established.
Ali says they will create a more conducive digital environment which needs all stakeholders and coordinated efforts.
He adds in terms of the digital landscape as people navigate through it, it is fast evolving, and it is imperative to recognize that there is no one immune from these threats.
He adds the Government and the people need to arm themselves with the resources to combat this issue.
