85,000 student e-ticketing blue cards will be disabled by the 23rd of November and will be available for use only from the 13th of January next year.
This has been highlighted by the Permanent Secretary for Education Alison Burchell.
Burchell says there have been cases of fraud in the use of the government-subsidized e-ticketing cards where people who are not eligible to use them are seen using them. They have also identified that it supports truancy.
She says that from term one next year there will be a restriction on blue cards for students where they will be operational from 6:30am to 9:00am and then again from 2:30pm to 5:00pm.
She urges students to get supplementary red and yellow cards for travel during the holidays.
Burchell says that subsidized blue cards for school children is a part of the free education initiative to ensure that children do not have any barriers to get an education.
