An 84 year old woman who witnessed the historic moment when Fiji gained its independence from Britain 43 years ago said she is looking forward to the Fiji Day celebration this Thursday.

The 84 year old citizen of Mission Hill Levuka who wishes to remain anonymous said more than 10,000 people were present at Albert Park on 10th October, 1970 to witness the historic occasion.

The 84 year old woman who used to work for Burns Phillip Home Center said she was invited to be part of the celebration and recalls that she was excited and felt proud when the Fiji Flag went up for the first time.

She recalls sitting at the pavilion and seeing the late former Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles.

This year’s theme for Fiji Day is “Moving together in Unity to Ensure a Prosperous Fiji”.
