Eight new vehicles solely dedicated to enforcement operations throughout the country was handed over to the Land Transport Authority today.
A caravan and four additional sets of Portable Wheel Weighers have also been handed over.
The government has provided necessary funding for the vehicles while LTA has spent $690,000 for other related costs.
The Land Transport Authority has also launched the first ever Road Codes in the iTaukei and Hindi languages.
Speaking at the launch, Minister for Transport Parveen Bala says an overwhelming issue currently being faced in Fiji is overloading and its associated impact to the deteriorating road conditions.
Bala says overloading is a real problem and the government cannot give the Fiji Roads Authority $600 million year in year out to fix the roads.
He says LTA will come down hard in cases of overloading.
Bala says the LTA enforcement operations are carried out in such extensive scales that some areas become difficult to stay in at night for which the caravan was designed and constructed.
