Policies by government are meaningless if critical infrastructure is not in place.
These were the sentiments of the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama while commissioning at the opening of the new Nakabuta bridge Nadroga.
Bainimarama says the opening of the new bridge will now allow the villages to transport their agricultural produce to the Sigatoka market with the use of vehicles.
He says this has brought a 7 years of wait to an end for the village of Nakabuta.
Bainimarama says the new bridge would also allow students to attend classes everyday eliminating the risk of drowning as they had to wade through the nearby river to get to the main road to catch the bus.
The Prime Minister says government had plans to build over 100 new bridges and crossings over the past few years and the coming years.
Bainimarama says that he is pleased to tell the villagers that they will now be able to travel safely now even rainy days.
Bainimarama adds that government wants to ensure that women, children and the elderly have all the necessities such as roads, water and electricity to be able to contribute positively to their families, village and the nation as a whole.
The total cost of the construction of the new bridge is $1.6m and was completed within a time span of 3 months.
