6 months given to phase out old taxi meters

Taxi operators will be given six months by the Land Transport Authority to phase out their old taxi meters and install new ones that have a receipt printer or option of getting the printer installed separately.

LTA Chief Executive Officer Naisa Tuinaceva said that taxi operators who are using meter models, Xander TX93, Schmidt G3, Digitax, Argo and Pulser are advised to get the new meters which will encourage transparency for public service vehicles.

Tuinaceva said that the new meters will enable the taxi driver to print out receipts for the passenger which will have information like taxi number, date, fare, the VAT component and the distance travelled.

Meanwhile taxi drivers have been given one month to get their meters calibrated and obtain a LTA seal of approval.

The Public Relations Officer for Land Transport Authority Vera Wedlock said that due to lack of staff, an additional month has been given for the calibration.

She said they have also taken into consideration that taxi is the only source of income for many drivers and they need to work the whole day to earn.

She said LTA officials will be working until 7pm to seal the meters.
