40 former sex workers have gone back to school with one now working as a qualified hair dresser and 2 more having opened their own business.
Community Services Centre Branch Manager of Pacific Counseling and Social Services Veronica Chand said the workers under the Sekoula Program are first presented with the opportunity and are put back into schools once they show a genuine commitment.
To help support them, assistance in the forms of bus fare and stationary is given by the centre and assessments are done at their homes to check that they have proper lighting for studying purposes and food for school lunches.
Their academic performance is also monitored and they are also encouraged to progress to tertiary level.
According to Chand, most of these former sex workers drop out of school early to help support their financially struggling families.
