Following four serious accidents in the past 24 hours, drivers and pedestrians are again being reminded of the need to be vigilant and take responsibility for their safety.
The first accident recorded in the Northern Division occurred in Labasa Town yesterday afternoon where a 60-year-old man while crossing near the Labasa market was allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by a 32-year-old woman. The victim sustained serious injuries and is currently admitted at the Labasa Hospital.
In another accident, a 13-year-old student was allegedly hit by a vehicle whilst crossing the road at the Cargill Place junction in Davuilevu Housing.
It is alleged that he did not see the oncoming vehicle driven by a 36-year-old man as there was a bus parked near the junction.
The student was rushed to the Nakasi Health Centre and later transferred to the CWM Hospital where he remains admitted in stable condition.
Director Traffic SSP Mitieli Divuana says the third serious accident recorded yesterday involved a Police officer along Ratu Dovi Road.
He says a vehicle driven by a 62-year-old man had hit a car driven by a 33-year-old woman, and as a result the 43-year-old police officer’s motorcycle was hit from behind.
The police officer sustained minor injuries.
The Director Traffic says this morning, a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old man veered off the road in Koroqaqa, Baulevu.
He says the victim sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the CWM Hospital.
The Director Traffic is urging drivers and pedestrians to be alert as a lapse of concentration can result in serious injury or worse, death.
He says accidents can be avoided, however a change of mindset is required in accepting the fact that we all equally share responsibility when it comes to road safety.
