A 32-year-old man has been arrested while another suspect fled from a roadblock site in Korolevu on Saturday night, following the discovery of white substances believed to be methamphetamine with cash and several mobile phones.
The second suspect was arrested the day after, and both remain in custody.
Meanwhile, an individual from Savusavu is in custody after allegedly being found in possession of a bag containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana while another individual from Delainavesi has also been found in possession of a bag containing dried leaves believed to be marijuana.
Assistant Commissioner of Police – Operations, Livai Driu says the arrests were made through the joint traffic operations team of Police and Land Transport Authority officials during a snap check.
ACP Driu says the seized substances have been sent for analysis.
Driu says from January to March 2024, 518 drug related offences were reported with unlawful possession of illicit drugs, 471 cases of unlawful cultivation of illicit drugs, 44 unlawful importation and exportation and 2 unlawful supply of illicit drugs.
From the 518 cases, there were 526 people arrested and charged where 13 were juveniles, 335 aged between 18-35 years, 169 aged between 36–55 years with 9 arrests for those aged above 56 years.
Western Division recorded 212 cases, North 129, South 108, East 47 and Central 30.
ACP Driu further says marijuana continues to be the most prevalent drug with a total of 408 cases, 108 cases of methamphetamine and 2 reported cases of cocaine.
488 of the accused persons were male and 38 female.
