382 victims of road accidents from 2010 to 2019 were under the age of 20 years.
This was highlighted by Fiji Police Director of Traffic Senior Superintendent Mitieli Divuana during the launch of the VIA- Road Safety Education program at Marist Brothers High School.
Divuana says this includes 58 victims from the ages of 6 to 10 years, 73 victims from the ages of 11 to 15 years and 251 victims from the ages of 16 to 20 years.
He says out of the total number, 50 deaths were recorded while 220 sustained injuries.
The Director adds even though there are many awareness programs being conducted in communities and schools, road accidents continue to happen.
Divuana says they hope the program launched today will provide a better platform for students in understanding their safety on the roads.
VIA programme is an international road safety programme for the next generation.
Total Fiji is partnering with the Education Ministry, the Fiji Police Force and the Land Transport Authority in implementing the programme in 15 schools in the country.
