$34 million is owed to the Water Authority of Fiji, and a large portion of this debt was part of the COVID-19 support.
WAF Chief Executive Officer Dr Amit Chanan says these debts are not only from residential customers but also for institutional customers.
He says they have a targeted recovery program, and because water is an essential service, they have to be considerate and patient with the customers.
Dr Chanan says the last step they take is to disconnect a customer's water supply.
The CEO adds that a new metering system has been put in place where it will send SMS alerts to help them recover some of the $34 million debt.
