Currently there are 41 cane harvesters around the country with another three to arrive before the crushing season ends.
This was highlighted by the Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed‑Khaiyum while handing over a sugarcane harvester to the Yako sugarcane farmers cooperative.
While speaking to the farmers Sayed-Khaiyum says that the $300,000 equipment is an investment by Government to assist cane farmers in cane belt areas address labour shortage.
He also highlighted that by the beginning of next year another 20 mechanical harvesters are expected to arrive to assist farmers to increase the level of production.
Sayed-Khaiyum says a lot of the mechanization that is currently being put in place took a lot of planning over a period of time.
The Attorney General says that we must first have the right economic circumstances and right fundamentals in place before the mechanization and assistance can be given out.
Government through the programme paid a deposit of $90, 000 on behalf of the cooperative to allow the cooperative to access financial assistance to acquire the equipment.
