Fiji has recorded 289 new COVID cases since last Friday as the Permanent Secretary for Health, Dr James Fong says we continue to trend upward in terms of cases defined by our current surveillance system.
126 cases were recorded in the Central Division, 118 were recorded in the Western Division, 41 cases in the North while there were 4 cases in the Eastern Division.
The Health Ministry says there were 103 cases on Friday, 86 cases on Saturday, 92 cases on Sunday while 8 cases were recorded in the 24 hour period ending at 8am yesterday
The national 7-day rolling average is now 69 cases per day.
Doctor Fong says if we do not take measures to reduce the risk of getting the virus, the small percentage of people that get the severe disease will be a big number of people seeking hospital care.
Dr Fong says a large number of people seeking hospital care will mean that they compete for hospital resources with those who need emergency care.
He says acute cases like heart attack patients, or road traffic accident cases will become more difficult to care for.
