22,826 families are being assisted under the Poverty Benefit Scheme which is a temporary allowance of $30 to $100 a month that supplements the family’s income.
According to the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation, 28% of Fiji’s population live under the poverty line.
It says that if a household income is less than $209.24 per week, they are considered to be living below the poverty line.
The Ministry has two other programs that assist people under the Family Services Unit.
The Ministry says that 26,394 recipients get $50 assistance for approved basic food items under the Food Voucher Scheme.
300 recipients are being assisted under the graduation program aimed at improving coping capabilities of people towards self-reliance through provision grants of $2,000 for income generating activities and training.
$38.3 million is allocated for the 3 programs.
