22-year-old Jasvin Kumar has been sentenced to 7 months and 15 days by Magistrate Seini Puamau for unlawful possession of methamphetamine.
Kumar was found with 0.09 grams of methamphetamine in December last year.
While sentencing Kumar, Magistrate Puamau says she considered suspending the sentence but this is a prevalent crime and more learned minds than hers can make clear that methamphetamine abuse is a scourge that all branches of government must unify against.
The Magistrate says the judiciary must do its part on behalf of the people of Fiji to stop and stem the tide.
She says deterrence and protection of the community are the primary considerations of sentencing crimes like this.
Magistrate Puamau says let the message go out that if you are found in possession of hard drugs, expect to serve hard time.
On the 22nd of December last year at about 10.15pm, while manning the Delainavesi road block site, a police officer was informed that a vehicle was transporting drugs.
The vehicle was stopped at the roadblock where the passenger and the driver were then taken to the Delainavesi Police Post.
Upon a body search, a zip lock bag containing white crystals was found in Kumar's underwear.
