Two academics of the University of the South Pacific have been awarded lifetime achievement for excellence in Pacific environmental leadership.

Professor Randy Thaman and Professor Bill Aalbersberg were awarded last night during the Pacific Islands Conference on Nature Conservation and Protected areas Conference awards night.

Professor Randy Thaman joined the University in February 1974 and has conducted research in all the USP member countries, most recently on community-based biodiversity in Fiji, Tonga, Niue Tuvalu and Kiribati, and on the floras of Kiribati, the Marshall Islands, Nauru and a number of islands in Fiji.

Professor Bill is the Director of the Institute of Applied Science at the University of the South Pacific (USP), which provides a Pacific home for the Network.

He has worked in conservation in Fiji for almost 20 years with 10 years of experience using participatory techniques in community conservation.
