Single mothers, divorcees, widows and grandmothers make up the largest group of people who have undergone livelihood skills training through FRIEND Fiji to be able to fend for their families.
Founder and CEO, Sashi Kiran says these people are not able to keep up with the expenses due to rising prices although some of them are getting welfare assistance of between $50 and $100 a month.
In the last couple of months to the end of June, FRIEND Fiji has trained 1,955 people in various livelihood skills.
Kiran says after advertising for training, their rooms were filled with 50 to 60 people on a daily basis to learn livelihood skills like soap making and activated charcoal making.
She says she is trying to talk to various industries to see how some people from the group can be gainfully employed.
Kiran says more and more people are still coming to ask for training to start their small businesses.
