As the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence heads into its second day today, women and girls around Fiji and the world are coming together to advocate against the deadly issue.
Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Legal Service Manager Miliana Tarai says this event is always an important part of every woman's life because it's 16 days in which the whole world pays close attention to violence against women and girls.
Tarai says personally for her, this event means a lot as it is the time when the women's movement calls out for changes to happen.
She says in these 16 days, they also advocate for human rights as well and take a look at how our government and our leaders have been performing in terms of human rights and what they have been doing about violations of human rights and women's rights.
She adds she sees the 16 days of activism as a critical part of the movement to end violence against women and girls.
Tarai says victims of gender-based violence need to speak out against this issue and know that they are not alone.
She says with the counselling services that FWCC offers, they surely will find the peace that they long for.
Tarai says people can always reach out through the national toll free helpline on 1560 or they can visit any FWCC branch close to them for counselling sessions.
The 16 days will include a march by each FWCC branch around Fiji per day with the Labasa branch kick starting the march yesterday with the Suva branch to conclude it on the 10th of December.
