Shocking statistics have been revealed by the Fiji Medical Association Executive member Dr Basharat Munshi during the 63rd FMA Annual Conference in Nadi where 102 new cases of HIV were recorded between the age group of 20 to 24 years in 2023.
According to the statistics provided by Dr Munshi, there were 415 new cases of HIV in 2023, where 3 cases were from the age group of 10 to 14 years, 30 new cases from 15 to 19 years, 86 new cases from 25 to 29 years, 61 cases from 30 to 34 years, 47 cases from 35 to 39 years, 41 cases from 40 to 44 years, 23 cases from 45 to 49 years, and 18 new cases above the age of 50.
In 2023, males had a higher number of new cases with 289, females consisted of 122 new cases, while transgender had four new cases.
Looking at the trend in a five-year term from 2019 to 2023, males tend to have a higher number of cases than females.
The statistics also revealed that there was a 390 percent increase in new cases for males in the five-year period.
