A Baka tree located opposite Thurston Gardens that has been an important feature in the capital city for more than 100 years fell to the ground late last night.
The tree has provided shade to many and has been part of a number of trees that have provided the much needed greenery in our capital city since the 1880s when the capital was moved to Suva.
We spoke to a 43-year-old taxi driver who was at the scene when the tree fell.
He said he is counting his lucky stars as he escaped injuries after the tree fell on his taxi and the Piccadilly taxi base in Suva last night.
Ami Chand said that at around 10.30pm, he arrived at the base sitting outside on the bench when he heard a loud cracking sound from the tree.
